ASC SafeStart 2020

“All the world’s a stage,” penned the Bard, and the American Shakespeare Center (ASC) should know.

Shakespeare’s plots and characters are as alive today as they were when the plays were originally staged. Universal themes of love, tragedy, treachery, audacity, honor, bravery, betrayal, despair, and political intrigue all combine into entertainment of legendary proportions.

In Shakespeare’s day and age, the lights did not go down as the curtain came up. That’s why ASC’s motto is “we do it with the lights on.”  Across the board, ASC walks the walk when it comes to Shakespeare’s original staging conventions – expect to find universal lighting, minimal sets, brisk pace, audience interaction, and gender-bending actors.

ASC’s actors are amazingly versatile. They are adroit with nuance, scholarly in language, and skilled in swordplay – and they also sing, play musical instruments, and dance! (Plan to arrive 30 minutes before the performance starts to enjoy the informal music performed by members of the play’s cast.)

Plays are staged in the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, the world’s only authentic re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre. Frommer’s Travel Guide insists that “this stunning re-creation of the first indoor theater in the English-speaking world… is, in itself, a reason to visit Staunton.”  Socially distanced performances at the Blackfriars Playhouse have been added through October 18.

The ASC’s Summer 2020 SafeStart Season features an ensemble of actors performing Shakespeare’s beloved comedy of (mis)identity Twelfth Night alongside his tragedy of jealousy and racism, Othello.  Whether you join us under the chandeliers of the Blackfriars Playhouse, under the stars on the airy lawn of the Blackburn Inn, or online via live stream events; they’ve kept the lights on just for you!  Be sure and book your tickets early as shows are selling out. And before you go, check out the ASC’s SafeStart Visitor’s Guide for actors, audience, and staff.
