National Pizza Day is February 9, and it might be one of the easiest holidays to celebrate! The hardest part is deciding where to grab your pie. And we’re not knocking pizza that comes from the freezer, but there’s nothing like biting into a cheesy, tangy, authentic slice from a local pizzeria. Here’s our pizza round-up, so you can indulge in your favorite greasy, chewy treat ASAP. From pizzas with traditional toppings to those that lean gourmet, these Staunton pies will capture your heart and stomach.
Shenandoah Pizza and Taphouse
The pizza at Shenandoah Pizza and Taphouse is fresh, flavorful and fully embraces Staunton’s enthusiasm for farm-to-table fare. This low-key pizzeria offers 20 gourmet pizza selections named after local businesses. Sip happily from an extensive beer list including 10 local taps. Pizza Luca
Pizza Luca, sister restaurant to Chicano Boy Taco, is located in Staunton’s historic “auto architecture” district and delivers an exciting vibe and cuisine. The lovely space is light and plant-filled with high ceilings, and features a seasonal outdoor seating area under a vibrant mural. Pizza Luca specializes in brick-fired pizza with gourmet toppings like caramelized onion, fennel sausage, kale, hot honey, and eggplant. You can also get salads made with seasonal ingredients and pasta dishes like spaghetti and meatballs. The menu includes several wines and craft beers and you can finish your meal with cannoli or tiramisu. While you are encouraged to dine in at the restaurant, take out service is now available, too!
Maria’s Pizza & Italian Restaurant
Family owned and operated Maria’s Pizza serves pizza, subs, and traditional Italian entrees like shrimp scampi and eggplant tortellini. Build your own pizza or select a house favorite like pesto swirl or taco. There’s a gluten-free menu, which includes salads, soups, pastas, and gluten-free personal pizzas. The kids’ menu has chicken fingers, hotdogs, and pizza by the slice. Looking to save money? The Sunday-Thursday large cheese pizza carryout deal is just $8.99. You don’t even need to go in: order ahead and pick it up at the drive-thru.
The Shack
The Shack’s website says it “goes out of its way to highlight artisans, makers and growers of our region! From the basil we buy from Ashly & Daniel of Malcom’s Market Garden to red turkey wheat that goes into our pizza milled by David Bauer at Farm & Sparrow we are always looking to support and promote sustainable relationships.” This attention to sourcing and craftsmanship means amazing-tasting pizza delivered to your plate. Look for pies with toppings like black walnut, burrata, oyster mushrooms, grayson, and garlic red wine. Don’t skip a scoop of homemade gelato for dessert.
Mike and Mario’s
Out for some fun in the park? Or heading to Queen City Brewing for a pint? Stop by Mike and Mario’s pick up a pizza (or two). Mike and Mario’s serves genuine Italian-style pizza in traditional and loaded configurations. Try the Hawaiian, special Philly, or chicken ranch flavors. Not in the mood for a slice? Order a sausage, peppers and onions feast or create your own pasta dish. You can also get subs, burgers, and food from the kids’ menu. Order take-out, delivery, or eat your dinner in the dining room.
Byers Street Bistro
If you enjoy spending an unseasonably warm winter night eating pizza on a patio, look no further than Byers Street Bistro. The Bistro has a big menu and doesn’t specialize in pizza, but their 10” gourmet pizzas are made with hand-tossed dough and are really yummy. Build your own, or choose from selections like The Godfather (lots of meats and mushrooms) or the Happy Hippie (a vegetarian pie topped with olives, artichokes, and feta cheese). Ask for the Bistro’s seasonal cocktail menu!
Bricks Restaurant and Pub
If you’re looking for a cool place to get a drink, a pizza, and play pool in downtown Staunton, make Bricks your next stop. You can’t go wrong with the aptly named Meat-A-Balla pizza or the Mama Mia, which boasts spinach and big dollops of creamy ricotta. Still hungry? Brownie bites and donuts with dipping sauce are on the menu for dessert. Bricks has daily happy hour from 5-8 pm. Stop in for Monday night trivia with prizes for the top three teams. Winners earn a $30 gift card! Bricks shows the big games and also hosts fun events like Thursday night karaoke, pool tournaments and DJ nights.
New York Flying Pizza
A lot of Stauntonians will tell you their go-to pizza joint for carryout or delivery is New York Flying Pizza. The pies are generous and loaded with the cheese you remember from childhood – the gooey kind that stretches and stretches. You can order Sicilian crust (square and thick) or Neapolitan crust (round and thin). The restaurant offers a full menu of pies, stromboli, calzones, and pizza rolls. You can also order salads, soups, burgers, subs, and pasta dishes. Make sure you sample some appetizers like bacon cheese fries, deep fried mushrooms, panini caprese, wings, rings, poppers, and deep fried pickles. There’s a kids menu as well as cheesecake, cannoli, and tiramisu for dessert. You can order your food online to carry out or eat in the dining room.
Stella Mia Pizzeria
Locally owned and operated Stella Mia Pizzeria serves up an extensive menu of pizza, Italian favorites, and desserts. Pizza comes in regular, Sicilian, and stuffed-crust varieties.
