The Chimerical Ballad of Betsy Bell and Mary Gray

“The Chimerical Ballad of Betsy Bell and Mary Gray” is a captivating puppet play that merges historical folklore with contemporary themes. It narrates the story of Betsy and Mary, two young women navigating a forest besieged by resource-devouring intelligent machines. As they strive to survive under constant surveillance, they also seek to aid a three-headed beast in defeating WISER®, a technology threatening to annihilate all life on Earth. This adaptation draws inspiration from the lives and tragic deaths of Bessie Bell and Mary Gray, who became a Scottish folk legend during the 1645 plague. Their poignant story is reflected in the mountains named after them in Staunton, embodying a timeless love and resilience. Created and directed by Walter Pultz, the play features puppetry by Claire Josefson, shadow puppets by Nat Slater, and an evocative score by Maria Leckey, performed by Josefson, Rob Cantrell, and Brooke Crittenden, with rehearsal assistance from Hannah Pennington. The production invites audiences to reflect on the intersection of myth, love, and the repercussions of human innovation.
