Queen City Music Studios is honored to host a House Concert of Old-Time, Traditional American, and Celtic Music with duos Joe Newberry & Val Mindel and Janie Rothfield & Allan Carr on Saturday, November 15th from 7-8:30 right in our Shop at 16 W. Beverley St in beautiful Downtown Staunton VA. The evening will feature an entertaining mixture of old and new Appalachian, Bluegrass, Classic Country and Celtic Music-Great singing, hot instrumentals, stories plus some surprise guests! Their signature sound and unique repertoire blends Janie’s Old Time American music with Allan’s Scottish songs for a sound that is old and new yet familiar and always fun! They blend a variety of instrumentals , jigs, reels and waltzes with songs from both sides of the Atlantic featuring great singing and tight harmonies and stories too! https://janierothfield.com/janieandallan JOE NEWBERRY: Known around the world for his clawhammer banjo playing, Joe Newberry is also a powerful guitarist, singer and songwriter. A longtime and frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion, he sang with the 2016 Transatlantic Sessions, and at the Transatlantic Sessions debut at Merlefest in 2017. The Gibson Brothers’ version of his song “Singing As We Rise” won an IBMA “Gospel Recorded Performance” Award, and with Eric Gibson, he shared the IBMA “Song of the Year” Award for “They Called It Music.” He made his debut on the Grand Ole Opry in September 2024 with duo partner Mike Compton. VAL MINDEL: A longtime musician, teacher and workshop leader, Val is known for helping singers to achieve the sound they want and have fun doing it. She teaches a wide range of harmony styles from the buzzy sound of American old-time and early country harmony to the weaving harmonies of songs from across the ocean. In the process she addresses such indefinables as tone, ornamentation and lead singing. In addition to being a regular on staff at the Augusta Heritage Center, she teaches at numerous music camps elsewhere in the U.S. and abroad, including Targhee Music Camp, Ashokan Music and Dance Camps, Centrum’s Voice Works, Pinewoods, Walker Creek Camp, Sore Fingers in England and SongRoots in Canada. She is a founding member of the California-based Any Old Time string band, and has made two CDs with daughter and old-time country musician Emily Miller. Val is also the author of So You Want to Sing Folk Music and has co-written, with Dr. Kathy Bullock, a chapter on traditional singing for the upcoming Oxford Handbook of Voice Pedagogy, due out in 2026. She lives in Elkins, West Virginia.
