6 Unique Stays in Staunton for Your Next Getaway
Staunton is a perfect destination for a day trip, but you’ll probably find there’s just too much to fit in a single day. Why not plan to spend a night or two? You’ll have time to visit more museums, take in an extra show, enjoy a hike or two, and eat in exceptional restaurants. Here are six unique stays in Staunton that will make you feel like you’re at home (but better)!
Maude and The Bear
Maude & the Bear, a story-book 1926 Montgomery Ward kit house, has been whimsically re-created as a modern restaurant and inn. The restaurant at Maude & the Bear serves a tasting menu Thursday through Saturday by reservation, as well as a multi-course breakfast for inn guests only.
Each suite is named after the owners’ favorite Aesop’s fables and has been carefully curated for comfort and relaxation. All suites consist of a private sitting room, bedroom, and bathroom. They are equipped with king-size beds, high-speed Wi-Fi, coffee by Nespresso, ice machines (the good kind!), and stocked refrigerators. Dinner reservations should be booked separately and in advance.
Gibson’s Warehouse
Four large, private suites and a common gathering space with seating in the lobby make up the accommodations at Gibson’s Warehouse. Each suite offers a full-Gibson’s Warehouse
Four large, private suites and a common gathering space with seating in the lobby make up the accommodations at Gibson’s Warehouse. Each suite offers a full-sized and fully-equipped kitchen, modern bath, living and office space, and a king-sized bed. Architect T.J. Collins-designed the building as a warehouse for hay, fertilizer, and farm equipment in 1905 when the Wharf District was in its heyday. The space was re-envisioned in recent years, and after renovations, the tall ceilings with visible rafters, large windows, wood floors, and areas of exposed brick remain, but modern furnishings make it the epitome of comfort and industrial cool. Enjoy complimentary WIFI and a treat basket as well as access to walkable downtown Staunton’s dining, shopping, entertainment, and farmers’ market. Make sure to grab a cocktail at the newly-opened Junction Bar & Lounge, enjoy dinner at Byers Street Bistro, take a stroll over the historic Sears Hill Bridge, or book a ride on the Virginia Scenic Railway, which departs from the train station across the street.
Barrister’s Row
Barrister’s Row is Staunton’s hottest new boutique lodging, offering seven luxurious suites in a single-story 1843 office building located in the center of downtown. Tucked behind the historic Augusta County Courthouse, the building provided offices for lawyers for 175 years. Now, the renovated suites have private entrances and historic details like floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and fireplaces in the bathrooms. The suites also feature large beds with plush mattresses, organic toiletries, kitchenettes, sound machines, and thoughtfully placed USB ports. Though all the suites have a similar contemporary modern aesthetic, they are all decorated thoughtfully and individually. If you have a large family or group coming to Staunton, you can reserve all seven spaces and accommodate up to 18 guests. Barrister’s Row offers self-check in and it’s an easy stroll to three cafes that serve breakfast. If you’d rather start your day with last night’s leftovers or an omelet made with ingredients from the Staunton Farmers’ Market, the kitchenettes have fridges and microwaves.
The Historic Berkeley Place
You’ll feel like you’re living in your favorite aspirational interior design Instagram account when you stay at the Historic Berkeley Place, an 1897 Queen Anne Victorian mansion in the Gospel Hill historic district. Thoughtfully modernized, the elegant home still contains original details like stained glass and a wide front porch with views of the Blue Ridge. The boutique inn boasts seven roomy and comfortable suites with king-sized beds, modern and elegant bathrooms, high-speed internet, and free parking. The Shenandoah suite includes two bedrooms, one with a king and one with a pair of queens that’s perfect for a family. Parties of up to eight will love the privacy and convenience of the Baldwin Penthouse suite, which has three bedrooms, a living room, and a full kitchen. While there’s no on-site breakfast, the inn has a coffee, tea, and snack bar, and it’s just steps away from downtown Staunton’s restaurant scene. It’s also convenient for those visiting the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Theater.

Historic Inn at Oakdene
You might have enjoyed exploring the 1893 Oakdene mansion and gracious terraced gardens during a Virginia Garden Week tour, but now you can stay there overnight! The Historic Inn at Oakdene’s eight suites are tastefully renovated and appointed with modern comforts. However, the property also retains its Queen Anne and Gothic Revival elements, including a turret and a sentry owl with light-up eyes. Elegant oversized suites with luxurious beds and modern bathrooms await visitors, along with a complimentary self-serve café area and numerous outdoor spaces like porches, patios with fire pits, and private balconies. The 1.3-acre property is steps away from downtown Staunton and all it offers. Why not sit down for a plate of homemade pasta, gourmet burger, or wood-fired pizza at The Shack followed by a tour of the Spotts-Coffman House to learn how people lived in the Victorian Era?

Staunton Stays
Welcome home! Staunton Stays provides short-term rental properties designed to be refuges away from home. All nine spaces include full kitchens, modern bathrooms, living quarters, and access to laundry rooms. Each plush suite has a different theme. The Shenandoah Suite represents “Shenandoah Valley’s incomparable beauty and nostalgia” with farmhouse-chic furniture incorporating old-fashioned sewing machines and barn wood. The décor in The Bohemian Suite includes bikes, butterflies, and original artwork. It will appeal to your inner artist. Bright with bold colors sure to inspire your imagination, the space offers several comfortable lounging and dining options. The Serendipity Suite is both comfortable and quirky with dreamy colors, cushy furniture, inspirational messages, and whimsical décor.
