The official first day of fall was September 22, but we’ve been salivating—for weeks—at the thought of apples, pumpkins, and anything with a hint of spice and cinnamon. If your palate enjoys these flavors, too, come to Staunton this fall for a full-fledged dine-and-drink-around of epic proportions. Our 10 best fall flavors are waiting …

  1. Chef Said Rhafiri’s pan-seared maple leaf duck breast at Aioli is served with butternut squash parmesan risotto, vegetable tempura, and blackberry reduction. It’s one of the finer meals you can enjoy in downtown Staunton this fall.
  2. We’ve come to know that many travelers make their way to Staunton just to eat. Yes, our meals are THAT good. One of their destinations is The Shack, where Chef Ian Boden is inspired to create daily menus based on what the growers are delivering. Watch for delightful treats like Rappahannock oysters, pumpkin pierogi, and apple fry pie!
  3. A name like “Harvest Rigatoni” says it all. At Byers Street Bistro, you can order up this savory dish that includes sweet Italian sausage, roasted Brussels sprouts, butternut squash, fried sage, parmesan cheese, and a garlic white wine sauce. 
  4. Cast iron cornbread is a southern staple and Zynodoa pairs it with house-made Gala apple butter. That’s just one of the special entries you’ll find on their ever-changing menu. You may also want to try the mixed green salad topped with Malcolm’s Market radishes, cucumbers, butternut squash, toasted almonds, Wayside Farm ginger, and herb vinaigrette.
  5. We’re always amazed at the ingenuity and think-outside-the-boxedness of Chef Mike Lund of Mike Lund Food & LunDch. You never know what incredible dish he will whip up, like maybe giant fennel-spiced garbanzo balls with spaghetti squash covered in herb marinara and shaved parmesan? It’s a veggie, gluten-free option that capitalizes on the season. And it’s delicious!
  6. If you love donuts, Paradise Donuts has to be on your list. Apple spice and caramel apple flavors are already rolling out, and maple is one of the all-time best sellers. New for this year are pumpkin spice muffins. You’ll want to arrive early to ensure you score one of these tasty seasonal treats!
  7. Moriarty Day is one for your calendar. It’s the day Redbeard Brewing Company releases their latest edition of Moriarty, a barrel-aged Imperial Stout. This year’s Moriarty Day is October 18, and this year’s pour has been settling in Bourbon barrels from John J. Bowman, Eagle Rare, and Buffalo Trace. 
  8. It’s no surprise that Staunton pulls off a flawless transformation to become the quaint wizarding hamlet of Hogsmeade in September. What may be a surprise is that Shenandoah Valley Brewing Company is tapping their Mischief Butterscotch Ale to coincide with the Queen City Mischief and Magic weekend (previously known as Queen City Potter Party … as in Harry Potter).
  9. Queen City Brewing has two delicious beverages that are perfect for the fall season. Try the hard-pressed Apple Ale or Cranberry Ale, both 7% ABV, and both quite refreshing.
  10. Fall flavored coffee and pastries are likely found in several of our favorite morning hot spots, but we like The By & By for their surprises like pumpkin rolls, peanut butter pie, and of course, their Oktoberfest celebration of craft beer and brats. Prost!

A 101: The Virginia Food Truck Battle & Beer Competition

The smells from food trucks on city streets are always so enticing, aren’t they? Think of a field full of food trucks. Now consider that they’re truly bringing their “A game” because such a gathering could only mean one thing: competition.

Now in its third year, The Virginia Food Truck Battle & Beer Competition will be held Sunday, September 3rd to benefit The Madee Project, a local non-profit foundation providing support to families facing their own battle: pediatric cancer. The event has grown with more food trucks than before vying for Grand Champion status. They cook well, you eat well, and The Madee Project benefits well. It’s a win-win-win.


  • Food trucks from across the Commonwealth are split into three zones.
  • VIP ticket holders act as the judges and receive a sample of each truck’s cuisine (six total per zone) and a sample from each of the six breweries in the beer garden. VIPs cast their votes and a winner from each zone plus one brewery is proclaimed. The three zone winners then deliver their wares to a panel of judges who name a Grand Champion food truck.
  • VIPs enter at 11:30 am before the general admission ticket holders are permitted access at 12:30 p.m.
  • General admission tickets provide entry to the Frontier Culture Museum and access to entertainment and children’s activities. Trucks, breweries, and wineries are essentially vendors for a la carte purchases starting at 12:30 pm.

VIP: $40 advance; $45 day-of
General Admission: $10 advance; $15 day-of; free for children five and younger

Bedlam Brewery

Staunton’s newest brewery has become a favorite on the local circuit, and it may be thanks to not only a new variety of craft beer flavors, but also the wood-fired pizza! There’s more than just excellent pizza and an umbrella-filled patio. Come for the brunch, unexpected delights like seafood and poutin, and of course, live music every now and again. Feel free to bring your pooch. The patio is dog-friendly.

Redbeard Brewing Co.

You will never tire of visiting Redbeard because their beer changes all the time. “Small batches of big beer” is their slogan, and they work hard to craft new brews for their dedicated patrons and those new visitors, too. When you go, you’ll be able to choose from about eight house-brewed options, including beers “as close to ‘Real Ale’ as you will find in Virginia, as all are warm fermented, unfiltered, and naturally carbonated in the kegs they are served from.”

Bring your own food or have something delivered to you at the brewery, as food is not served. Live music, however, is. Watch the calendar.

Shenandoah Valley Brewing Company

Many craft brewers are happy to share some of their knowledge and help others along, but the folks at Shenandoah Valley Brewing Company take that generous spirit a step farther by offering homebrewing supplies as well. Craft your own flight to see which of their beers you favor, and then take a stab and brewing your own.

There are no food options on site but you’re welcome to bring your own or order from the Farmhouse Restaurant on Fridays and Saturdays. Happy brewing!

Queen City Brewing

Thirty-two taps could be overwhelming to some, but we would suggest you try a flight (or two or three) to figure out which of Queen City’s “on tap” varieties will be your favorites. With more than 80 recipes to pull from, you can expect a healthy rotation of options pretty regularly. Homemade soda, fruit wines, and hard-pressed apple ale are also available. If you’d like to try your hand at the brewing process, ask to become the brewer.

Like Redbeard, food is not available, but you’re welcome to bring your own or order-in. A food truck is on-site every Friday, and live music rings out every Wednesday and Friday night.

In Albemarle and Nelson counties, the Brew Ridge Trail winds past six different breweries, spread from Crozet south to Arrington. But the Brew Ridge Trail is just the beginning. Why stop after just a half-dozen pint savoring pit stops? Just a short hop from the trail, another beer trail awaits. The Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail is centered in the historic Shenandoah Valley town of Staunton, which boasts a highly concentrated collection of craft breweries pouring an eclectic array of ales. So the next time you’re savoring inspired local brews with a Blue Ridge backdrop, why not stop and see what’s on tap at Staunton’s three breweries?

Start your tasting tour of Staunton at the Redbeard Brewing Company. Grab a seat in the bright and roomy taproom and sample from the brewery’s selection of meticulously crafted microbrews. Redbeard usually has just over half-dozen beers on tap, running the gamut of styles, from choices like the subtly fruity Blueberry Wheat Ale (5.5%), to the refreshing Citra Grisette Saison (3.8%), or the 221B Baker Brown (6.3%), a beer that just medaled at the Virginia Craft Brewers Cup. The tap list changes about every two months, and Redbeard regularly showcases newly concocted seasonal beers with release parties, like the upcoming celebration of autumn-inspired offerings like the Harvest Ale and the Sweet Potato Pie Porter, slated for late September.

Next, make your way over to Staunton’s Wharf Area Historic District and stop by the cozy taproom at the Shenandoah Valley Brewing Company. The four-year-old brewery has a well-rounded tap list, including rich, full-bodied brews like the Glenhaven Scottish Ale (5.2%) or the Buck and Ball Brown Ale (5.6%), along with European-inspired options like the Three Rivers Belgian (5.3%) and lighter, golden ales like the Long Meadow Kolsch (5.2%) and the ShenVal Lager (4.9%). Beyond the beers, with a laid-back, affable vibe, the homey taproom is also a place worth lingering—there are board games out for patrons to play, and pretzels on the bar to snack on.

The taproom also regularly turns into an intimate musical venue, showcasing regional artists. Home-brewers can also load up on essentials in the supply store attached to the tasting room—and the Shenandoah Valley Brewing Company even has a handful of beer recipes to peruse, from IPAs to porters.

Finish up just a few minutes from the heart of downtown Staunton at Queen City Brewing, touted as the town’s first post-Prohibition brewery. Sit at the bar or grab one of the umbrella-shaded outdoor tables and try not to be awestruck by the selection. With more than two dozen beers on tap, Queen City Brewing pours everything from the crisply drinkable Gypsy Gold (4.7% alcohol) lager, to fruity, seasonal brews like the Grapefruit Shandy (4.5%), to heavier selections like the Black Rabbit Stout (5.3%), a nod to Ireland’s most iconic dark stout.

But it’s not just beer on tap. The place also has options like the Ale-tail Mimosa (7%), Ginger Beer (6.2%), Blackberry Sangria (7%), and even serves a number of non-alcoholic, homemade soft drinks, including birch beer and cherry cream soda. At Queen City Brewing, aspiring brewers also can try their hand at crafting a batch of flavorful beer to take home—with more than 80 different taste-tested recipes to pore over for inspiration. The brewery also regularly showcases live music with Open Mike Nights on Wednesday and Friday night Picks n’ Pints sessions.

Still need an encore? Continue along the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail.  Just 15 miles east of Staunton in the town of Waynesboro, try a tasting at the Seven Arrows Brewing Company. Sample from golden brews like the Aurora Pils (6%), heavier beers like the seasonal Hermenator Dopplebock (7.2%), or branch out and try Barefoot Bucha, an organic, Fair Trade, craft-brewed kombucha. Swing by on a Saturday morning for the brewery’s weekly Om Brew, a yoga session capped off with a craft beer.

Fall Flavors: Farm-to-Cask Brewers Challenge

The long-awaited flavors of fall are captured in special release beers presented in the Farm-to-Cask Brewers Challenge. The first fall collaboration among the breweries of the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail, Farm-to-Cask showcases a one-weekend-only beer by each craft brewery. It’s a great day to sample and celebrate the harvest of the Shenandoah Valley.

The charge to incorporate local ingredients with seasonal brews kicked off last weekend in Harrisonburg. Robust flavors were on tap at caskrelease_shareimage1200x1200_sept17Brothers Craft Brewing, Three Notch’d Tap Room, and Pale Fire Brewing. Now see what the brewers of Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County have whipped up for this Saturday’s cask tap.


At Queen City Brewing Co. the Blackberry IPA includes local blackberries, of course. The abundant fruit is so readily available that neighboring Shenandoah National Park hosts an annual “all things blackberry” celebration in July.

Redbeard Brewing Co. has infused their Mosaic IPA with locally-grown Carolina Reaper Peppers, proclaimed the “world’s hottest chili” by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2013. The Carolina Reaper’s average SHU (Scoville Heat Units) is 1,569,300. For comparison, a Jalapeňo averages 2,500-5,000 SHU. 

The working farm brewery in Waynesboro, Stable Craft Brewing, is using home-grown ingredients to add über local flavors to their Harvest Ale. Cascade hops are a foundation of the Stable Craft line-up, but fresh-from-the-farm peaches and blackberries will add a sweet punch for your palate.

It’s apple season in Virginia, and Seven Arrows Brewing Co. is tapping a very Virginia apple lager this weekend. After brewing, the beverage is infused with locally-grown Cascade hops. Venture over and take a sip.

Staunton Festival Celebrates Blues and Virginia Craft Beer

Bring a chair and get comfortable in downtown Staunton’s Wharf District on August 6 for the eighth annual Shenandoah Valley Blues & Brews Festival. It’s a rain or shine shindig featuring fantastic Blues artists and tremendous Virginia craft beer.

The Artists

Mud Morganfield, son of Muddy Waters, has followed in his father’s footsteps. “When I’m up on stage I always feel pops is there with me and it means so much that I can get on stage and keep his music alive around the world.”

Taking the stage with Mud is Kate Moss. Like the model, this Kate Moss turns heads too, with her looks and mad guitar skills. Joining them is Kevin Chisnell of Fatty Lumpkin and the Love Hogs, as well as Brian Mesko, an accomplished Roanoke jazz guitarist. 

Moonshine Society is led by Blues Hall of Fame member Black Betty, a striking woman whose voice brings a reckoning to every show. The band is joined by renown saxophonist Ron Holloway, who has played with The Allman Brothers, Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Dizzy Gillespie Quintet.

The Blues Music Awards 2011 Acoustic Album of the Year went to The Nighthawks for their album Last Train to Bluesville. Of it, Blues Blast Magazine wrote, “Ten tracks of incredible acoustic blues, all the more impressive given that it was recorded as a live session in the studio rather than pieced together of tracks and parts. The crystal clear recording would showcase any flaws – instead what comes through is a tight, professional acoustic set that truly showcases The Nighthawks’ musicianship.”

Parker & Gray are fresh and local. Their mission is to continue the tradition of preserving blues and roots music while also leaving their own mark. Give them a warm welcome and then look for them at a brewery, bar, or restaurant near you.

Little Lester, “a little white boy singin’ the blues,” is far more, as his performances show. He is a local legend playing shows at a variety of establishments.

DAY One in downtown

Plan out your day based on which craft attraction opens first. Enjoy a great downtown breakfast and visit Sunspots Studios to watch glass-blowing or to blow your own ornament. Walk across the street to try a wine flight at Ox-Eye Vineyards Tasting Room (open 10 am Saturdays; noon Sunday-Friday). Their patio is a great place to take in the views of the Wharf District while sipping Shy Ox, a summery citrus rosé with a strawberry nose.Beer & Wine

Within walking distance is Byers Street Bistro, a fantastic place for lunch with a great patio for enjoying the fresh air. For an incredible view of the downtown area, travel up to Sears Hill Bridge right behind the Bistro and bask the beautiful sights. 

Shenandoah Valley Brewing Company, now located at 103 W Beverley St, opens at noon Friday and Saturday; 2 pm Sunday, and 4 pm Tuesday-Thursday. SVBC is the place to fill any growler you may have with you. Create your own flight from their 10 taps to mix and match however you choose. 

Redbeard Brewing (open 1 pm Friday-Sunday; 4 pm Tuesday-Thursday) is a small batch craft brewery offering six to eight of their beers at a time on tap. Redbeard is not yet distributed, so your only chance to sip what they’re concocting is on the premises. That’s a very cool “drink local” opportunity.

Bedlam Brewing (open 11 am Friday-Sunday; 4 pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday) is a newer brewery located on 2303 N Augusta St. Stop in on Wednesday nights for Trivia starting at 7:00 pm, or visit on Fridays and Sundays for live music. Don’t miss out on their delicious wood-fired pizza and happy hour specials starting at 4 pm daily. 

Staunton’s first brewery since Prohibition is Queen City Brewing, which opens at 4 pm daily; noon on Saturdays. Their patio is calling you to enjoy a pint and live music Wednesdays and Fridays. Also try your hand at crafting your very own beer with their Becoming the Brewmaster program.

Day Two in the country

Fill up on something hearty before hitting the road for more craft adventures. 

Barren Ridge Vineyards (Fishersville) opens at 11 am daily; 1 pm Sunday. Their expansive patio boasts incredible pastoral and mountain views. Try a flight, then ask about their sausages, cheeses, crackers, and jams that pair beautifully with your favorite wine.

Seven Arrows Brewing Company (Waynesboro) opens at noon Saturday and Sunday and 11 am Monday, Wednesday-Friday. Select Saturdays feature an event called Om Brew, a yoga class rewarded with a beer afterward. Seven Arrows recently added Nobos kitchen to their facility, serving food from when the brewery opens until it closes. Stable Craft Brewing (Waynesboro) opens at noon Saturday-Monday, and 4 pm Wednesday-Friday. Nestled into a working horse farm, Stable Craft is a cool place to experience a little of the outdoors while tipping back a beer and scarfing down a burger in the Draft Room.

Basic City Beer Co. (Waynesboro) opens at noon Friday-Sunday, 5 pm on Mondays, and 3 pm Tuesday-Thursday. This relatively new brewery is located on 1010 E Main St. Basic City Beer Co. offers live music often, so make sure to check their Facebook page and website to keep up to date on upcoming performances! Don’t miss out on Hops Kitchen, either. Located on the back patio of Basic City, this small kitchen serves chef specials and shareables during the week, and a full menu Fridays-Sundays. 

Close out your day with a great downtown dinner, a show at American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse or a classical concert by Heifitz International Music Institute.

Much ‘Ado About Brew in Staunton

As the central hub of the brand new Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail, Staunton offers great craft beer with a heaping side of culture and a dash of history. Toss in a sprinkle of outdoor recreation and you’ll find that we’re an awesome getaway destination in the Shenandoah Valley.

“Blessings of your heart, you brew good ale,” wrote William Shakespeare in Two Gentlemen of Verona, and we’d like to think our brewmasters whip up some mighty fine elixirs as well. Queen City is our oldest brewery, Redbeard is our small batch delight, and Shenandoah Valley is our go-to for home brewing supplies and advice. No visit to Staunton is complete without a trip to each of them and a night at the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse, where beer is also served.

In addition to the breweries of Staunton, beer gardens and tap rooms serve up a variety of craft beer. Sample around and then enjoy a fresh-from-the-farm meal at one of our notable restaurants where you’re likely to find even more brews to choose from.

When you’re ready for some outdoor rec, you’ll find our parks to be pretty and well equipped, but just a few miles away are more challenging opportunities in Shenandoah National Park.  For every speed of adventure, there’s an outlet nearby.

Finally, raise a glass to the nation’s 28th president, Woodrow Wilson, whose home and presidential library is located in Staunton. You can’t be this close to presidential history and not give a nod with a visit. The 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine is a must-see for any car enthusiast.

Want help pairing your Big Burrito with a beer? The staff at Baja Bean Co. dedicates quite a bit of time choosing the worthy, and will gladly assist you in making a wise choice.


Get comfortable and order The Statler (fennel sausage, smoked bacon, red onions, and fresh mozzarella) with a Devils Backbone “Eight Point IPA” or a Blue Mountain “Full Nelson.” There’s just not much that beats pizza and beer, am I right?


Choose from a wide range of “well cultivated” bottled and canned craft beer at this legit craft shop loaded with local, artisanal wares and made-to-order delights. Try the Classic Reuben, their signature sandwich featuring Farmstead Ferments sauerkraut from Charlottesville and handmade Russian dressing. It pairs well with Brothers Craft Brewing’s “Drift” session ale, according to Matthew Miller of Craft Beer Nation.


Southern comfort food rises to the top at Byers Street Bistro. Start with fried green tomatoes, then move on to shrimp and grits or meatloaf. Skip dessert in favor of something tasty like the latest release from Pale Fire or Starr Hill.
